Sherman A. Taylor
January 6, 1906- September 25, 2004
Longtime Meeker resident Sherman A. Taylor, 98, died Sept 25, 2004, at Community Hospital in Grand Junction.
Sherman Anderson Taylor was born Jan. 6, 1906, in Chester, Utah, the son of Roy and Roxanna (Jennings) Taylor. As a boy his family ran a sheep operation in Utah and in 1923 Sherman spent a summer working at the Lake Hotel in Yellowstone National Park. He returned to Utah and on Dec. 21, 1927, married Deltha Thompson. He drove a school bus and did leather work until 1936 when he was hired for the mail route between Meeker and Rangely when the family moved to Meeker. From 1938 until 1951 they operated an old fashioned country store, service station and a cobbler's shop at the corner now occupied by Watt's Ranch Market. During that time he was a pilot and the civil air patrol for this area.
After selling the store, "Sherm" and his daughter Parna farmed wheat and did custom farming around Meeker. He was an excellent carpenter and a general jack of all trades. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served one term as justice of the peace in Meeker.
After retiring, he moved to Clifton in 1985 and remained there until 2002 when his health failed. Mr. Taylor was an accomplished musician. He and his family played for many local dances. After his health declined and he became a beloved resident at Pioneers Hospital, he took great pleasure in playing at the Wallbridge Wing for the "Old Folks". He enjoyed being outside, hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his children, Nyla (Dick) Merriam, of Meeker, Beryl Taylor of Clifton, Shirley Taylor of Meeker, Byron (Sharon) Taylor of Galt, Calif., Parna (Pete) Etchart, 19 grandchildren, numerous great and great-great grandchildren, one sister, Doris Ross of Vernal, Utah, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Sherman was preceded in death by his wife, Deltha, three children, Twila Taylor, Helen Stephenson and Lynn Taylor, five brothers and five sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. this morning, Thursday, Sept. 30 from the Meeker Ward Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Interment will follow in the Highland Cemetery. Friends may call after 10 a.m. at the church.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Pioneers Hospital Memorial Fund through Cochran Memorial Chapel which has been entrusted with the arrangements.

As he passed away in the last decade, I don't think his death certificate will become publicly accessible for some time, but it's nice to have an obituary on hand of him, as WELL as this little bio written on him by his daughter, Shirley. I'm hoping this link to his life will open up many more opportunities to learn about him.
