Last Rites For Ralph Taylor Held in Holladay
LAPOINT- Funeral services were held last Wednesday at Holladay for Ralph Taylor, 40, who died from a fall received when he and two neighbors were fishing on Strawberry River. Catching his hook in a tree, Mr. Taylor was climbing up to free it when the limb broke, letting him fall 12 feet. He died on the way to his home.
Prayer was offered at the home by the Bishop of his ward. Speakers were Willard Day and Brother Livingston. Two violin duets, "Perfect Day" and "O My Father" and a vocal solo, "Lead Kindly Light" were offered. Benediction was by Coy Hayward.
Pallbearers were Roy, Rex, Leslie and Sherman Taylor, Jess Grey and George Nyberg.
Burial was in the Holladay Memorial Park under the direction of the Larking Funeral home. Lynn Cloward dedicated the grave.
Ralph Taylor was born January 13, 1910 at Chester, Utah, Sanpete County. He came to the Uintah Basin with his parents in 1914. He was married to Ruth Eva Nichols, March 10, 1936. Later their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
Surviving are his widow, his mother, Mrs. Roxa Taylor of Lapoint and the following brothers and sisters: Rex Taylor, Mrs. Vera Huber, Mrs. Della Nyberg, all of Lapoint; Leslie Taylor, Leeton; Sherman Taylor, Meeker, Colo; Mrs. Zelma Jensen, Bremerton, Wash.; Mrs. Cora Hayward, Bountiful and Mrs. Doris Ross of Vernal.

This obituary leads me to conclude that he and his wife Ruth had no children, but I shall have to investigate that point further.

I don't know who this lady is, but I'd like to assume it is his wife, Ruth.... or possibly a sister?

Death info on Henry Lyman Huber

Henry Lyman Huber would have been an older brother to Roy, born between Roy's brothers Elmer and Frank.
His gravestone is the only clue I even know of to his existence- no birth record, no death record. Fortunately, enough information is provided on the grave marker to give us the basic information needed.
Based on the accuracy of this gravestone, the following dates apply:
BIRTH: 1 Mar 1894
DEATH: 17 Mar 1894
The assumption is made that his short life of 16 days was lived out in Midway, Wasatch, Utah.

This photo was not taken by me, and was graciously provided by an anonymous photographer who contributed to the findagrave.com site.

A discrepancy will need to be looked into as the findagrave.com website states that his death date was the 16th (instead of the 17th), according to an imported record from the Utah State Historical Society. I shall have to investigate.

Death info on Earldean Taylor

Earldean Taylor was Vera's older sister.
According to this death certificate the following dates apply:
BIRTH: 21 Apr 1899 in Levan, Juab, Utah
DEATH: 25, May 1914 in Chester, Sanpete, Utah
She was 15 years old when she died.

Death Certificate:

In Vera's written life history, this is what she had to say about the event:
In October 1913, we discovered my sister, Earldean, had heart trouble. The doctor came often and tried to help her but there was little he could do. She grew worse and time passed and May 25, 1914, she passed away. This was the first death to come to our family and we were all very sad at this time. She was a good person and everyone loved her. She was a good musician and was organist and was always willing to help where and whenever she could.

I have been unable to locate a 1914 obituary or death notice for Earldean in the "Manti Messenger" or the "Ephraim Enterprise" (both local papers that would have logically made notice of her passing in the community she died in) but if one would ever materialize I would love to see it.

Roy Huber War Service

When World War One broke out in 1914, Roy Huber was 17 years old, and when it ended in 1918, he was 21. Thus he was of a prime age to be involved in the conflict.
A smattering of photos of him in uniform have been found in various photo albums, but until I came across the following documents I had not known to what extent he was involved.

Roy's Draft Card:
SOURCE: ancestry.com (particular source info at far right of image)

This draft card was written up in June 1918, so it is doubtful that he was very far engaged in fields of combat. This card also reaffirms his birthdate and birthplace, tells us that his employer at the time was located up in Evanston, WY, that his mother was referred to at Maggie (perhaps informally?), and we can get a good look at his signature. We also learn from this that he had blue eyes.... aww...

War Service Questionnaire:
SOURCE: ancestry.com (particular source info located directly below pertinent image)

From this document we learn that at some point he was based at Camp Kearny in California. We also have a reaffirmed birthdate and birthplace, that he did indeed attend one year of High School, and "one winter course at U.A.C." He also was a farmer by profession and was not married.

Discharge card:
SOURCE: ancestry.com (particular source info located directly below pertinent image)

This document is probably most valuable regarding his enlistment and service assignments, but unfortunately I can only guess what what all the military shorthand means. What I DO know (in addition to the continued affirmation of his birthdate/birthplace) is that this document indicates he did NOT serve overseas, and was honorably discharged 21 Feb 1919.

"Frank-Dad" photo
I'm assuming Roy is on the far right and his brother Frank is directly to his left... don't know who the guy on the far left is, unfortunately.

Additional documents have been discovered on Roy's brothers who all were drafted or enlisted around the same time, but that information will be divulged in a later post.
