Roy's Formal Education

It has been the family story that Roy Huber never finished school.
Colorful versions of the story say that he had a mean teacher who rebuked his penmanship or insulted him in some way and he refused to go back. More commonplace versions state that he was needed to help out on the family property, or simply didn't want to go to school anymore.
But the moral of the story was: he always wished that he had stuck with it and regretted his hasty decision.

A terribly faded photo from the personal album of Rhea Merkley.
It's relayed information that Roy is one of the boys in this photo, and that this was given to Roy by one of his teachers.

A few documents give clues to the completeness of his education:

Eighth Grade Graduates:
SOURCE: Wasatch Wave 1913, May 30, p.5
As you'll see highlighted, Roy Huber DID complete up to the eighth grade. YAY!

War Service Questionnaire:
SOURCE: ancestry.com (more specific source info located on image at very bottom)
On this form Roy indicates that he completed "1 yr Wasatch High School, one winter course at U.A.C." (U.A.C. apparently being the preliminary name for Utah State University in Logan, UT)

So regardless of the actual year, he did in fact leave school before his formal education was completed.

Census info for Henry A & Margaret Huber family

The following are the Federal Census records highlighting Henry Albert & Margaretha Huber as they were raising their family.

1900 Census:
SOURCE: ancestry.com (more particular source info is found within the image of the record, directly below it.)

Interestingly, this census shows Henry Albert living at a boarding house in Park City, UT, likely while he worked at the mines (it indicates his occupation as "concentrating L.S. ore")
I looked for census info on his wife (as this record ALSO states that he'd been married for 8 years by this point) and their 4 boys (as their youngest was born in 1899 they should've all been listed) but I've been unable to track it down yet.
I wonder how long they had been living apart like this?...

1910 Census:
SOURCE: familysearch.org OR ancestry.com (more particular source info is found within the image, directly below the record.)
Here the family is all listed together living in Midway, UT. It is interesting to note the ages of all the boys and the types of jobs they are listed as engaging in.

1920 Census:
SOURCE: familysearch.org OR ancestry.com (more particular source info is found within the image, directly below the record.)
Here the family is still listed as all living together, even with the boys ranging from 20-27 years old. It also indicates that Margaretha's mother tongue was German thus I wonder how often she used it or if she tended to speak in German or English to her boys.

By the 1930 Census the boys show up with their own wives and families, and as Henry Albert died in 1920, I'm assuming Margaretha visited from family to family during that time as I haven't been able to locate her on any further census'.

Photos at the Taylors

The following are a collection of what looks to be like a Sunday afternoon visit with the Taylor family when Vera and her siblings were in their youthful prime.
This theory is based on the commonalities in dress, season, and age of all those photographed, and for some unfortunate reason none of Vera's brothers are pictured. Bummer.
The first two photos are from the personal collection of Clayton Huber, while the remaining shots are from the personal collection of Rhea Merkley.

50th Anniversary

As Roy & Vera Huber were married on 22 Oct 1924, their Golden Anniversary would have occurred on 22 Oct 1974.
The following are copied photos from the 50th wedding anniversary party of Roy & Vera.
I'm regretting the quality now of how I scanned these photos, thus I may return to the source of this selection (Clayton Huber) to get these rescanned to a higher resolution.

There were more photos from this event, but for some reason I didn't copy them... I guess this would give me a great reason to go back and scan everything a little better.

Newspaper clipping:
SOURCE: Vernal Express 1974, Oct 17, p.3
Found in the personal albums of Della Nyberg.

ALSO here is an article I found on the event in their local paper (where they misprint his name as "Ray" not "Roy" in the title, unfortunately...)

SOURCE: Vernal Express 1974, Nov 7, p. 7

These two have not been transcribed as many of those individuals in attendance may still be alive, but it may prove of great interest for anyone researching those important enough in their lives at the time to attend the event.

Because he passed away in the last 50 years, his death certificate should be available any time soon, but because the online copies have not yet been indexed for the county in Colorado he died in, it may be awhile before I can post it here. As soon as I can obtain it, this post will be updated.

Roy and brothers' growing families

The following photos show Roy Huber, his two brothers, Elmer and Frank, and their growing families around the late 1940s or early 1950s. These appear to have been taken at the same family event, but a few in the setup kept moving out of place. So for the sake of accuracy, I decided to label them all separately.
All photos are from the personal album of Rhea Merkley.

Doris Althea Taylor Ross 1913-2010
Doris Althea Taylor Ross passed away peacefully during the early morning hours of Christmas Eve; just weeks shy of her 98th birthday.
Doris was born January 18, 1913 in Chester, Utah. In 1915, Doris's family moved by covered wagon to the Uintah Basin. Only two years old at the time, Doris was in charge of holding the family's cat during the long journey.

Doris worked in the accounting department of Moon Lake Electric for many years. After retiring from Moon Lake at age 65, she went to work managing Frontier Travel & Tours until age 84.
Doris enjoyed playing the piano, singing, watching the Lawrence Welk Show, tending her garden, spending time with her family and friends, and reading the newspaper every morning with a good cup of coffee. She will be remembered for her kindness and generosity to people and animals, her sense of humor, and her youthful spirit, which stayed strong for nearly 98 years.

Dean Huber War Service

Roy's brother Dean was a teenager when WWI started, and filled out a draft card for the service.

Dean Huber's draft card:
SOURCE: ancestry.com (Particular source info is included directly on the image to the far right.)

He was 19 years old when he registered 12 Sept 1918 in Heber City, UT

No further military records exist for Dean, likely because the war officially ended a few months after this registration card was filled out. Dean died of pneumonia 1922.
